Dried out p-trap
If you sewer like smell is coming from your drain you may have a dried out p-trap. A p-trap is a device in your plumbing that prevents the sewage odorous from rising. It’s the U-shaped section of the pipe under your sink that that holds the water. If the pipe has not been used for a while or is dried out it can allow sewer gas to rise. Usually running water for a period of time will wet the pipe again, but if the smell persists, call your plumber.
Bacteria in your water tank
If you’re detecting a stench in your hot waster, it may be that bacteria has managed to infiltrate your water tank. Try turning the taps/shower onto it’s highest heat. This should kill the bacteria. If not, give us a ring and we’ll come take a look for you.
Sewage line issues
You might leave the house for work and get a strong whiff of sewage. This generally means the council are working on the sewage lines. If they aren’t, you might just need to clear out your home’s ventilation.
